USPS and chickens

I recently ordered baby chicks via online order and they were delivered today at the post office. They called for us to pick them up. That was about 8 AM, at 10 AM I was there to pick them up. The guy at the post office said they weren't there and that they had been sent to the Tractor Supply store. They were trying to get them back and would deliver them to the house, what they should have done in the first place.

Well, since I was already in town, and Tractor Supply is on the way out of town, I thought I'd just stop and check to see if I could find out anything there. That was before 10:30 and by that time all the chicks that were delivered that morning were all gone. Tractor Supply had sold my chicks to someone else.

At this point, my wife is boiling, something about Tractor Supply stealing our chicks and demanding replacement or money in return. The USPS gave me a full refund, as someone there who they say wasn't even supposed to give out mail gave them to Tractor Supply. Tractor Supply is offering to replace the chicks if the supplier still has that kind for sale.

At this point I want the chicks replaced too [free] just for all the frustration it has caused and the gas I used making two trips to town.

Nothing worse than chicken thieves....call the sheriff and have them arrest SOMEBODY at Tractor Supply for selling stolen goods ! You may have to come up with CIN's ( Chicken Identification Numbers ) to prove your case, though.... :D

Kind of weird. I had never heard of ordering chicks through the mail, until I moved to a small town. My local post office gets them in all of the time. They call the recipients as well, and ask them to come pick them up.

So the USPS took your mail to the Tractor Supply and they sold it for profit. WTF!

If I order Viagra and wait two hours to pick it up, will the USPS take it to the Wal Mart pharmacy counter and let them sell it.

Or how about Virginia Cured Ham. Will the USPS take it to the local food bank and donate in my name.

PLEASE Raise Hell for all of us so the USPS dosen't do crazy stuff like this anymore.

Do you expect literate employees at both USPS and Tractor Supply to read the shipping label?

Actually the PO said some janitor gave them to TSC and some illiterate guy at TSC told the manager that all the boxes had shipping slips for them attached. TSC has agreed to get replacement chicks.

Some hopefully good news, I called the hatchery and told them the whole story including the fact the PO refunded me the money. They were going to contact the store manager at TSC and ship me my chicks by the 14th billed to TSC.

I hope they don't have a replacement janitor on duty handing out mail to the wrong people this coming Monday.

Ordered my chicks through TS and post office called me last Friday to come and get them. My wife went and picked them up no problem.

All is well. Bock, bock!

If this story is true, get the US Postal Inspector involved. Opening mail not addressed to you is a FELONY.

I think I would also file a report with the county sheriff. I guarantee you, if you get the postal inspectors and the local sheriff involved, this will not happen again for a long time.

Re: USPS and chickens

I don't think the postal inspectors or the sheriff will get involved in this, nor should they. It's going to be real tough to prove any criminal intent. I'm sure Tractor Supply gets chicks mailed to them on a regular basis this time of year. The problem here is that an idiot at the PO heard a box "peeping" and immediately assumed "Tractor Supply". Then a moron at TS supply picked up the peeping box and put the contents out for sale. Both thought they were doing the right thing, and neither took the time to read the shipping label.

It's not against the law for the PO to deliver to the wrong person or address. It's just crappy service. As far as TS opening it, still no crime. They were expecting peeps, got a box of peeps, and opened it. Sure, they should have read the label, but, barring that, it was an honest mistake.

Sounds like everyone involved is taking steps to rectify the situation and right the wrong. That's all you can ask for in this situation. Hopefully both employees will be dealt with by their respective employers.

My wife insisted on going in to TSC this AM to set them straight. I told her it was already taken care of and our new chicks would be in the mail Monday. The manager in TSC was very nice, said it was a mix up and they would pay for my replacements, which I already knew, but my wife just had to hear for herself.

She thinks I'm too easy on people, I just figure people in business will almost always try to fix their mistakes especially if you treat them right. After all, the guy knows I'll be back to buy feed, equipment and other supplies.

I've learned in life, it doesn't solve anything to go into a rage over something. Too much stress can cause early demise. So, life goes on and I've not made any enemies over something so trivial as a few baby chicks. When you consider that, except for a minor delay in delivery and the frustration over the issue, I end up with my chickens free. Well, except for the feed and care they require. I think the next time people all included, from the PO to TSC will be a little more watchful at least for a while anyway. "I HOPE!" :banghead:

From the day we got our first chicks in, years ago, we have been the 'chicken couple' at our local post office. They don't get a ton in and found the cheeps as musical and cute as we did.

So where are you ordering chicks from that you dont have to wait 30/60 days for the next hatch?

Got my Red Bourbon turkeys in this week, no problems at the post office.
Ordered from McMurray Hatchery. I have always gotten great service from them. Not one dead chick in 3 orders.

Mtn Man, it's a hatchery here in Ohio that also supplies Tractor Supply with theirs and thus the mix up Mt Healthy The reason they are sending mine so quickly is because they put me at the top of their list. TSC will probably have to wait an extra week for theirs. I might add that I've already waited over 2 weeks for them to arrive. I ordered Golden Laced Wyandotte pullets. I found the web site for Mt Healthy at this web site. I scrolled down to Ohio and just tried the site that looked the most promising.

We have been buying Eggs on the net and hatching them in an incubator
we haven't had a great success rate though
out of 36 eggs we have had bout 15 hatch and 12 live....

We have another couple dozen due to hatch in about a week...

After that we are gonna start buying live pullets from the local feed store....

I'm Going to start a thread now and show pics :D
